Games are the heart and soul of Hub BBS. Most players opt to live in MajorMud, a fantasy role-playing game quite like Dungeons and Dragons. You get to chose a race and class, and then travel around the realm, killing monsters for experience, and having great adventures. Much more about this game can be found on Mudville, a website devoted to the game.
We do have other games - and have been seeing people play them from time to time. LORD, or Legend of the Red Dragon is a popular, easy to learn game that has just been added to the main server in June, 2002. We also added WilderLands MUD and Erotica! Both of these are text-based role playing games that involve exploration and solving puzzles to succeed. Tradewars is also available.
Hub features a stable, well established non-pvp MajorMud Realm that has not reset ever - and it went online in October 1993. This Realm is a peaceful, cooperative place, where killing other players, hoarding items, and raiding deathpiles and ganghouses is not allowed. This game always has had the largest group of players. This is very much a family-oriented game, and profanity is discouraged over public channels. Depending on what night you drop in, you may be serenaded by a singing Ninja, or be surprized by a spontaneous trivia game for free time. One of the ops loves to conduct treasure hunts for various items, too.
To answer many of the questions that are often asked...
- Is PVP allowed?
- Not at this time. We will have occasional pvp days upon request.
- Do the Sysops play? Is there a Mudop?
- Yes. Hub BBS does have playing staff members. All members selected for such status are long-time members of the board who serve in a voluntary capacity. Our board is mainly working adults, and our staff is no exception. As we all have full lives outside of the game, please do understand if a staffer is not immediately available. Email to the sysop usually gets results if you cannot reach one of the staffers live.
- Why? What powers do they have?
- Ops are mainly there to keep the peace and keep the realm going. They can give a retrain or alignment change if really needed, but try not to. They do not give out information about what monsters are home or what items are available. About the only special powers they have outside of those are the ability to boot, suspend, or jail disruptive intruders. They will try to answer your questions, help you out of a bind, or give you clues in a treasure hunt. They will not play for you, though, and do expect members to make reasonable efforts on their own. Remember, this is a non-pvp, non-competitive Realm. Sysops are also not permitted to emulate. Again, they are only there to keep the game flowing.
- These sysops were also members for a long time before accepting the titles. They are regular players just like you are - all are at level 75+, and have no need for most items in the realm. They do tend to distribute what they collect.
- What keys are available to regular players?
- All members of the Hooked class have sys goto and sys map. This class is $10/180 Days, and free for the first 30 days.
- Can I buy Lives? What about lag deaths?
- Yes. The realm has the Plus Pack installed, and you can buy a life for 25 platinum. If you suffer a lag death, ask an op for a life.
- When is cleanup? How long is it?
- Cleanup is scheduled to occur at 7:00 am Central time daily. This is to keep our supply of monsters nice and fresh. The typical cleanup is about 8 minutes total.
- Will someone drag me around for experience?
- Perhaps. Most of our members are working adults who are not at the keys as much as they would like. We will do our best, but cannot make promises. Once you are in the Addict class, you will likely receive all kinds of help because we know you are planning on staying around for a while.
- Please do not whine if you are not dragged. The game was never designed to be mastered in a day. There is nothing sadder than to see someone who has done nothing on their own hit level 52 and have to ask where to train! It is cool to get the first few levels out of the way, but by level 10, you are pretty much able to fend for yourself, even if it is not as fast as you would like.
- Who are the ops? What if I can't reach one?
- Your sysops is Mustikki (Pagan). Cyrus (Rotabba) and Mother (Jim Steinman) are on hiatus at this time, but drop in when they can. They have full sysop powers. Ops are visible when logged on, but may not be at the keys. You can drop an email to Pagan at pagan@mmudville.com or try gossiping for an op. Even if we are not actually at the keys, some of us do at least check in remotely. Again, an email to pagan@mmudville.com usually gets responded to fairly quickly.
